Yep. You read that correctly. While even a high functioning autistic child has many issues, there are some nice things about Kyle having autism. For example, he NEVER forgets…anything. He saw a truck in a store once and months later was still asking me about it. I told him to save his money so he did. Since Kyle learned how to tell time, we never oversleep. School or not, we wake up on time. Once he came into my room when I was enjoying a late morning in and he told me it was time to get up. I said, “Why, Kyle?” “Because it is 8:00, Mommy.” “But, why, honey?” “It is 8:00.” Kyle is never mean. He will hit someone if they hit him first, but he never starts the fight. He does not go out of his way to exclude children. Kyle does not like other people to be upset. He will start to cry if I cry. Kyle is very organized. His room is usually very clean. He knows the order of our morning routine. I rarely have to remind him of his morning chores. At first, we tried to shake him out of the routine but during our busy school mornings, I have come to appreciate his orderliness. Kyle is very silly and he loves to laugh. His humor is typical of most 7 year old boys. He adores booger, fart and barf jokes the best. He does not care if the actual joke makes sense. He was telling jokes with his younger cousins this past summer. When someone reached the punch line, he gave a hearty laugh whether or not the joke was funny. So while our journey through the autism world has had many downs, we try to count our blessings. |
