Rain Man

My son is not Rain Man. The Oscar winning 1988 film starring Dustin Hoffman is the face most people picture when they hear the word autism or autistic. The famous lines, “Kmart sucks”, and “I’m an excellent driver” have been uttered repeatedly. The film is guaranteed to make you cry and laugh simultaneously.

Unfortunately for those of us in the autism community, Rain Man is perhaps the worst film ever made. The directing and acting are superb. So great in fact, most people only picture Rain Man as the face of autism. Thankfully, people are starting to realize how incorrect that picture is.

I vaguely remember my life before autism. I vaguely remember thinking about those people every so often. Now autism is something I am an expert about. My degree does not matter…I am just a mom who has a child who is autistic.
